Baystate Medical Center has received Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) four consecutive times, placing it among leaders nationally in nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes.
Beacon Award – Silver
For the second time in a row, Baystate Medical Center’s Heart & Vascular Critical Care (HVCC) and Progressive Care Units (PCU) were recognized by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses with the silver Beacon Award for Excellence. The award honors individual units that distinguish themselves by improving every facet of patient care and serve as role models to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care.
Beacon Award – Gold
In 2021, Baystate Medical Center’s Medical & Surgical ICU recently earned the Gold Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses! This is the ninth time the ICU has won this national three-year award, the fourth time in a row, and the second time receiving the Gold level. The award recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s standards in leadership structures and systems, appropriate staffing and staff engagement, effective communication, learning and development, evidence-based practice and processes, and outcome measurement.

Platinum – BMC, BFMC, BWH, & BNH
All Baystate Health hospitals were recognized at the highest level; by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for their efforts in promoting enrollment in the state eye, tissue, and organ donor registry through community outreach.

Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals
Baystate Medical Center was named as one of the nation’s top performing hospitals by Watson Health®. The annual 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study spotlights leading short-term, acute care, non-federal US hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. The study is designed to identify impartial, actionable, and attainable benchmarks for hospital and clinical leaders as they work to raise their own organizations’ standards of performance in cardiac care.
Get with the Guidelines
The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association recognized all Baystate Health hospitals for their continued success with the Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus Award, the highest level award for care of stroke patients.
Mission Lifeline STEMI Receiving Center – Gold Plus
BMC was recognized with the AHA/ASA Mission Lifeline Gold Plus Award as a STEMI Receiving Center. This Accreditation denotes the highest level of commitment to consistent and optimal STEMI care at the system level. This is the second year this award has been given out, and BMC has received the highest rankings both years.
Society of Thoracic Surgeons Three-Star Rating
Baystate Health’s Cardiac Surgery Program has earned a distinguished three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its patient care and outcomes in aortic valve replacement (AVR), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR) surgery. The three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places Baystate Health among the elite for AVR, CABG & MVRR surgery in the United States and Canada.
Age-Friendly Health Systems

Nurse Residency Accreditation
The BH Nurse Residency Programs (BMC, BFMC, BWH) were all accredited as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
American College of Nurse-Midwives Awards
Baystate Midwifery & Women’s Health received two awards from the American College of Nurse-Midwives for best practices in reducing the proportion is preterm, low-birth-weight infants, and achieving the triple aim of better care, healthier populations, and lower costs.
CHIME Most Wired Award
Baystate Health has been recognized as a 2021 Digital Health Most Wired health system by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME)—ranking among global industry leaders in the Acute and Ambulatory categories. This is the ninth time in ten years that Baystate has earned this award, which assesses healthcare organizations’ adoption, integration, and impact of core and advanced technologies. Baystate was recognized for the successful adoption of technologies and strategies such as population health and cost-of-care analytics, HIEs, integration engines, virtual visits, and a robust patient portal to improve the health and experiences of its employees, patients, and community.

Baystate Health includes certified Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), helping to ensure high quality, coordinated care for patients.
Employment and Workplace
The Forbes Best Employer by State
Forbes has named Baystate Health one of the best employer in Massachusetts. The surveys determine the organizations liked best by their own employees. Surveys were done from October 2020 to May 2021. Responses were compared throughout that time, to account for any variations in the results collected before and after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
ACHE Diversity & Inclusion
Baystate Health received the Diversity & Inclusion Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) of Massachusetts. The award recognizes the hospital’s outstanding commitment to equality and humanity in the pursuit of healthcare excellence.

Premier Supply Chain Excellence Award
Baystate Noble Hospital (BNH) received the 2021 Premier Supply Chain Excellence Award. These award recipients are industry leaders that are truly making a difference in healthcare through their efforts to improve care delivery operations, outcomes, costs, and the health of communities across the nation.

Ragan Communications
Baystate Health’s Marketing & Communications team received five Crisis Communication Awards including “Communications Team of the Year” recognition from Ragan Communications. Ragan’s 2020 Crisis Communications Awards received submissions from organizations across the globe and awarded those who demonstrated their influential campaigns and content that were instrumental in communicating important messaging during a crisis, including responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with team of the year, Baystate Health won for Media Coverage resulting from Dr. Andrew Artenstein’s article in The New England Journal of Medicine “In Pursuit of PPE,” Social Media Response for the viral video of Baystate Health’s first Code Rocky, and honorable mentions for President & CEO Dr. Mark Keroack for his leadership during the pandemic “CEO Grace Under Pressure,” and for BH’s COVID-19 Campaign.
